CIVIC EDUCATION IN THE SCHOOLS
Since the No Child Left Behind focus began over 20 years ago, emphasizing reading and math, Kansas has few standards for teaching about our government or civics before the Senior year mandatory government class.
We will hear from local league members about this issue. We will also have a presentation by two high school students, and League members from Heights High School about a voter education event they held at the start of the school year and why they are passionate about voting rights. Light snacks. No preregistration necessary
This year marks 100 years of United States citizenship for Native Americans. Members of federally recognized tribes hold the unique distinction of being both U.S. citizens and tribal citizens. Tribal members possess political authority over their collective lands, superseding state and local authority. In the state of Kansas, four tribal nations operate reservations. Learn about tribal sovereignty and laws affecting Native American citizens from tribal relations experts and tribal nation representatives. Tuesday Topics is a partnership event of the Wichita Public Library and the League of Women Voters of Wichita Metro. The public is welcome. No pre-registration is needed.
