Subject: THE VOTER May 2024 LWV Wichita-Metro
From: LWVWichita Communications

April has been another busy month, with lots of events: Naturalization, tabling at an ACLU event, Earth Day, a presentation at North High School, and several other events and activities. Still in the future, as I write this, is the LWVK Annual Council in Lawrence, sure to be a great time and educational. We’re working on improving communication so you can stay up to date and get in on the fun for future events as your schedule and interests lead you.

May is allowing us a bit of a breather as we gear up for the primary election, although we will be a presence at the Cinco de Mayo ICT Streets festival and the monthly Naturalization ceremony, and East High School. Look for the info and signups for these opportunities! We are planning a training session for anyone interested in working at tabling events in the next few weeks. We’ll keep you posted.

Also, please be thinking about what topics you would like to voice an opinion on to your legislators, at any level of government. Make a list and bring it with you to our May Unit meeting.

PLEASE NOTE: Because our usual 4th Monday falls on Memorial Day, we will be meeting on Monday, May 20 instead. After a brief recap of the LWVK Council, the rest of the meeting will be devoted to postcard writing and socializing. It promises to be a fun evening AND a chance to do good! It doesn’t get much better than that.

As your presidents, it is our sincere hope that you will be active with us in these coming months. There is much to do and we need all hands on deck. This is not an election season to watch from the sidelines. To piggy-back off the old saying on WWII recruiting posters:

Monthly Unit Meeting
Post Card Writing Campaign
Monday May 20,  2024
Advanced Learning Library
6:00 pm-7:30 pm

We have the postcards, stamps, markers, and snacks.  You are the advocate! Come join us for another postcard-writing campaign. We may need to write the USPS Board of Governors about Wichita's postal distribution center losing our mail.  How can we be assured our mail-in ballots will arrive on time? Or should we write our county commissioners about increasing the number of ballot drop-off boxes?  Let's brainstorm how to make our collective voices heard!

This event is open to the public - be sure to bring a friend.

Welcome to our newest member Hope Dale.

We hope our members are watching for opportunities to help our League's work educating voters on registering to vote. Our Voter Service team, which any member can volunteer with, is present at various community events with an information table and also at high schools. When we get closer to the primary and the general election we will be hosting candidate forums. Each month there is an opportunity to volunteer at a Naturalization Ceremony. Watch for the e-mail invitations and Facebook posts to volunteer or check our calendar on our website - you can sign up to volunteer from the event notice on the calendar.

Our LWV Wichita-Metro membership year is from July 1 to June 30. At the end of May members will get their first reminder to renew for the July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025 dues year.

We hope you log on to our website lwvwichita.org to renew and update your interests. Please check your profile to be sure your contact information is all up to date. If you are logged on you can view our membership directory.

Toward the end of the renewal process, if you don't want to pay by credit card look for the option of paying later by check. Mail the check to our treasurer at P.O. Box 2411, Wichita, KS 67201.

Our newest members who joined after January 31st, 2024 will not get a reminder in May as their membership will go through June 30, 2025, a few bonus months for new members.

If you would like to donate to the League for our General Fund or our fund for delegates to the 2024 LWVUS convention in Washington DC through our website, click on the donate button on our website and you will see two buttons. Click on your choice and then notice the invitation to log on to our membership utility. Log on and then follow the steps.

Your dues ($65 annually) support the work of our local LWV Wichita-Metro ($13), LWV Kansas ($20) and LWVUS ($32). We work, study, and advocate at all 3 levels so we and other citizens can be informed voters! We have a Sustaining Membership which permits our League to support the membership of some of us who have volunteer time. For more information about Sustaining Membership please email membership@lwvwichita.org.

Thank you to all of our members for helping support the work of the League.

We're absolutely thrilled about our new informational cards and can't wait to spread the joy far and wide! If you join us at our postcard writing gathering, we'll have plenty of extras for you to take and share.

But if you can't make it, just drop us an email at randi@lwvwichita.org, and we'll happily send some your way!

We need your support to send our delegates to LWVUS Convention in Washington DC.

Our LWVUS Convention will take place June 27-June 30. This is a hybrid event and will take place in Washington, DC and online. Based on our membership count we have 3 voting delegates. More information will be coming soon with the costs for attending in-person or by Zoom. Our league budgets for our voting delegate's registration fees but we do not budget for travel expenses or room.

To assist our potential voting delegates with their traveling expenses, our league is establishing a fund for that purpose. If you would like to make a contribution toward travel and/or housing costs for our 2024 LWVUS Convention voting delegates, you may write a check to our treasurer with "convention" in the memo line. Mail your checks to:

Treasurer, LWV WIchita-Metro
P.O. Box 2411
Wichita, KS 67201

You can also make a donation directly from our website. Click the button below to donate to the LWVUS 2024 Convention Travel effort to support sending our local voices to be heard from the national league!
