Wow! We’re always busy, but April has some big events.

By the time you read this, we will have already enjoyed co-sponsoring session 3 of the Building a Resilient Wichita series, this one on Indigenous Wisdom and Climate Change at the Mid-America All-Indian Center. Session 4, on Inclusive Community Engagement, will be on April 20 (see below for further details).

Our State Convention will be held here in Wichita at the Advanced Learning Center on April 22, with the State Board meeting the evening before. Click HERE to register.  We hope that our members will attend in great numbers, since we are the host unit. So if you haven’t registered yet, please do so in the next few days.

We are still looking for 2 or 3 more people to serve as voting delegates, representing our unit in the decisions to be made. The unit pays registration fees for all delegates, so you can attend for free, including lunch. If you would like to serve in this capacity, please contact Martha or Nancy at copresidents@lwvwichita.org to let us know.

On top of that, all of the committees are meeting to develop their plans and budgets for the coming fiscal year, so that the Finance Committee can present a complete proposed budget to the full membership at our Annual Meeting later this year.

Also, the nominating committee is still inviting people to serve on the Board in open positions, including Co-President. If they call you, please consider serving. If you have been looking for a way to become more actively involved, don’t wait for them to call you! Send an email to copresidents@lwvwichita.org to let us know you’re interested and how best to contact you, and we’ll get the info to the Nominating Committee.

See you soon, at one or more of these events! Change only happens when we’re willing to drive it, and the League is a great way to help that happen.

TUESDAY TOPICS
Flock: The License Plate Tracking System
Tuesday April 25th
Advanced Learning Center, 711 W 2nd St N
(In-person event)

A grandmother was slain in Andover in 2022 and the suspect was found and caught by tracking her missing car. The license plate tracking system used is a program called FLOCK and it can track vehicles by tag number or build, make and model. Use of this technology raises many questions, such as how effective is it in helping with crime? How was the camera system funded? Are there restrictions on what information the police can collect and how they can use this information? What balance is needed for law and order and individual privacy? Learn about FLOCK and explore the issues with Criminal and Civil rights attorney, Mark Schoenhofer, and a representative from the Wichita Police Force.

Exception - our members who joined after January 31 are paid up through June 30, 2024, What a deal! Invite a friend to join now and she will be paid up until next year.

We do want League members to log into our League membership database and take a look around, especially take a look at our calendar. If needed update your personal information - address, e-mail, etc. You can even add a photo.

To get started on checking your personal information after you log on, please look at the upper right corner of the screen. You will see your name listed there.
